Abstract
„Demographic change processes are already causing a shortage of skilled labour in almost all sectors of the economy. In addition, young people with poorer educational backgrounds are only insufficiently integrated into the training market (BMBF, 2023). In this context, vocational colleges, as a specific form of vocational school in North Rhine-Westphalia, offer young people a "second chance" to catch up on their school-leaving qualifications and gain initial vocational skills with their diverse educational programmes (Enggruber, 2016). The role that school social work plays in the complex system of vocational colleges, especially for the vocational integration of young adults with heterogeneous needs, is discussed in this research article. Based on eight case studies at vocational colleges, the focus is placed on the range of tasks of school social workers as professional actors in accompanying pupils with special support needs during the transition to a complex world of work and their functions for improving opportunities for participation are analysed across cases in the form of a qualitative type formation.“ (authors‘ abstract; BIBB-Doku)
