Abstract

“The paper explores the potentials and problems of cooperative learning in virtual rooms using the instrument of breakout rooms. In the context of a qualitative survey, students and lecturers of a master's program in vocational education are interviewed about their virtual learning and teaching experiences. The leading question is how breakout rooms affect participants' motivation and whether the use of distributed resources increases their efficiency and problem-solving capacity. The results reveal a number of process gains and process losses of cooperative learning in breakout rooms. For example, an exclusive as well as inclusive atmosphere is created, which can be conducive to motivation and learning. Also, the reduced social environment can bring efficiency benefits to collaboration. Even if new knowledge is rarely generated in the end, there is often an increase in competence.“ (author’s abstract; BIBB-Doku)
