Abstract

"Mathematical abilities rank high among the cultural fundamentals which are required for an independent life in society, namely for full economic, political, social and cultural participation. Some basic understanding of mathematical structures is a necessary precondition for everyday life as well as for virtually all vocations and thus an indispensable criterion of a successful pursuit of one´s goals. Similarly, the preparatory function of mathematics for higher education studies is largely uncontested, as this domain plays a fundamental role in many fields of study, above all science and technical as well as economics studies, but also in the humanities including social and political studies. There is, however, a definite lack of inquiries into the specific contribution which mathematics render - in conjunction with a host of other factors - at the point of transition into vocational education and training and into the relevance of mathematics for the actual learning processes in vocational education and training and their outcomes at the end of the respective programmes. The present paper, based on the ULME studies conducted in the City of Hamburg, is intended to shed light on the significance of mathematics for a successful transition into vocational training in general and business-related training in particular. In the analyses, performed for one different programme of vocational education and training in the commercial sector, mathematical abilities as measured at the beginning of the programme are related to the achievement levels attained at the end."
