Abstract
"Creating meaningful tests in language subjects is a particular challenge to the German school system where open forms of essay-writing have traditionally been favoured over standardised forms of student assessment (e.g. multiple choice tasks). At school types such as the increasingly popular Berufliche Gymnasien, both general and professional subjects are taught since the courses are designed to prepare students for subsequent academic studies as well as qualified training in the German dual system. The article explores the specific examination approach of vocational colleges in classes leading to university-entry qualifications (Abitur and Fachhochschulreife). As a result, examinations in all subjects including German are designed to test general writing skills and professional knowledge. This is usually tested in writing assignments that include work-related situations - a claim whose realisation proves difficult for boards and examiners. The authors discuss some trends in the current examination practice by reviewing some current examination examples that are based on competence-orientated curricula and national educational standards."
