EU initiatives in cross-national recognition of skills and qualifications

Abstract

"In this chapter, current initiatives in European Union (EU) vocational education and training (VET) policy, above all the European Qualification Framework (EQF), are subject to detailed scrutiny. Unfamiliar educational concepts - such as modularity, credit, accumulation, transfer, learning outcome, accreditation of prior experiential learning (APEL) and qualification framework - are described in detail, their application to the EU outlined and key issues concerning their implementation set out. the chapter first outlines the main characteristics of the EQF and examines the political background to its development, before setting out and commenting on its key design features, indicating likely developments in implementation, and going on to look at dependent developments, in particular, the European Credit System for Vocational Education and Training (ECVET)."
