Abstract

„The world of work and professions is characterised by processes of change that encompass both technological and global dimensions. This change is not a target state, but a self-accelerating process that is both a condition and an object of vocational education and training. In this context, occupational activities change up to the elimination, transformation or new formation of entire occupations or occupational profiles, so that the life occupation concept increasingly loses significance (Kraus 2006). With these structural changes in the world of work and professions, which are associated with career entries and exits as well as changes, the demands on individuals to remain adaptable and mobile increase (Bergmann 2020, Dick 2009, Frosch 2020). This in turn raises the question of how the functions of the profession can be compensated despite these upheavals and the accompanying blurring of professional identities. Furthermore, it is an open question what strategies the subjects have in dealing with uncertainty in order to do justice to the key categories of mutability and occupational mobility. From an educational point of view, the focus is on biographical coherence. This article uses discontinuous occupational and employment biographies collected through autobiographical narrative interviews to show how objective (crisis-like) upheavals can be subjectively framed in such a way that biographical coherence and occupational identity can emerge. The interviews, which were analysed using narrative analysis, outline that discontinuous biographical trajectories can be located in the areas of tension between stability and mobility, between employability and professionalism, and between identity and diffusion (Bergmann 2020; Frosch 2020). The results show that an occupational biographical reconstruction can support individual educational processes in the sense of creating coherent occupational identities and at the same time enable connectivity to other (occupational) contexts and thus promote occupational mobility. Finally, impulses are formulated as to how in-company training could support reflective learning and educational processes throughout professional development and thus contribute to the creation of professional coherence.“ (authors‘ abstract; BIBB-Doku)
