Abstract

"The conference brought together sociologists and economists from all parts af Germany, many other European countries, the Unites States, and Australia. This volume contains abbreviated versions of most of the papers presented at the conference. The papers exploit the panel dimension of the data to study the fortunes and misfortunes of individuals and families over time; to contrast the experiences of different demographic groups within Germany older and younger workers, men and women, new immigrants, guest workers and natives, and residents of eastern and western states, among others; to compare the life courses of parents and children; and to study the impacts of government programs on socio-economic well-being. Over half of the papers compare and contrast the experiences of Germans with their counterparts in other countries, including the United States, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Italy and Sweden." Die dort vorgelegten Papiere entstammen verschiedenen Disziplinen und Themenbereichen. Neben methodologischen Fragen werden die Auswirkungen der Bildung auf dem Arbeitsmarkt, die Erwerbsbeteiligung von Frauen und Älteren, Determinanten der beruflichen Selbständigkeit, Einkommensentwicklung und Armut, Intergenerationsaspekte, Immigration und Assimilation - teilweise im internationalen Vergleich - betrachtet. Der letzte Abschnitt enthält zwei Papiere, die sich mit Ostdeutschland im Übergang befassen. (IAB)
