Occupational and internal labour markets in Britain and France

Abstract

"However similar the pressures exerted on the world's labour markets by economic development and technical change, country- specific features are surprisingly persistent. A proposed typology based on the distinction between 'occupational labour markets' and 'internal labour markets' is shown to capture a broad range of the country variation in such areas as recruitment and training practices, job demarcation, employee mobility and collective bargaining. Empirical data on labour markets in Great Britain and France lend support to the proposed model, whose implications for policy-makers are also considered." (author's abstract) ((en)) Die Autoren entwickeln eine typologische Unterscheidung zwischen "berufsbezogenen Arbeitsmärkten" und "(firmen-)internen Arbeitsmärkten". Der erstere Typus, der für Grossbritannien kennzeichnend sei, zeige vor allem berufsbezogene Ausbildungssysteme und Mobilität der Arbeitskräfte. Im zweiten Typus, der in Frankreich vorherrsche, ist die Ausbildung und die Mobilität der Arbeitskräfte v.a. innerbetrieblich und weniger an vorgegebenen Berufsinhalten orientiert. Die Autoren entwickeln des weiteren Zusammenhänge zwischen ihrer Typologie und der Organisation der Berufsausbildung und der industrial relations in beiden Ländern. (IAB)
