Abstract
„The vocational orientation and guidance of young people by schools has increasingly become the focus of educational policy initiatives in Germany. With the widespread introduction of so called "Potenzialanalysen" (a form of standardized competency assessment), instruments are finding their way into vocational orientation that are characterized by a strong focus on individual prerequisites for specific vocational fields. They are intended to be the starting point for a process of targeted vocational orientation in schools that begins early and that is supposed to last until the end of obligatory schooling. At a programmatic level, potential analyses are associated with various requirements. They are supposed guide pupils to "explore initial career interests and inclinations", support the choice of career field, for example in the context of initial internships, but at the same time also provide information on "development goals and next steps" as well as "indications for school and extracurricular support" (BMBF, 2022 S. 2). Thus, at programmatic level, potential analyses have a inherent "multi-functionality" (Kuhn et.al, 2018, S. 9) Until recently, however, no research has been conducted into how these are implemented at the level of practices and interactions. In this article, we focus on so called feedback interviews, in which pupils receive feedback on the results of their competence assessment. On the basis of ethnographic observations, the article examines the question of how the results of potential analyses are made object of learning, education and counselling processes at school. Since the feedback interviews are considered the starting point of a multi-year, consecutive process of vocational orientation (KMK, 2017) at the school, they can be seen as a focal site in which the results of the competence assessments are translated and transposed into specific educational practices. The article specifically sheds light on how professional futures are interactionally negotiated and discussed, and how local actors implement the institutional requirement to perform competence assessment against the background of local organizational and institutional requirements.“ (authors‘ abstract; BIBB-Doku)
