Abstract
(Autorenreferat; BIBB-Doku)
"As the basis for a systematic interpretation of the past as seen from the perspective of present demands and for the purpose of examining the consequences for current and future development, a tried and tested socio-historical structural model for the macro-didactic analysis of pedagogical institutions is presented using the example of the vocational college in the German dual education system. This is followed by a description of the origins of the vocational college and its transformation into an educational centre for non-academic professions, having socio-political as well as curricular functions and being influenced by the interests of the social powers involved. To this end, relevant social problem areas are contextualised in terms of their selection, processing, solution and also rejection on the basis of a comprehensive study (2005-2008) and also evaluated and supplemented from today's perspective. This will provide useful lessons for those involved in vocational education and training, including vocational and business educators, with regard to eliminating current shortcomings, and will also provide short-term and longer-term reform strategies. The present article therefore primarily aims to make a key contribution to discourse on the current significance of vocational colleges, on the extent to which they are at a disadvantage, and on the need to upgrade them."
