Abstract

“This paper addresses development-based practice research in the context of preparation courses for vocational education with regard to the link between theory and practice as perceived from the practice perspective on academic research and reflects on the benefit attributed to academic research as part of the leading approach of action research (Dewe 2010). Within the research paradigm of action research, different processes comprising the classification and attribution of the assignments and tasks of the actors involved play a significant role in the research process and thus pose a challenge for development-based research practice. The empirical material is drawn from an ongoing, cross-border cooperation project between two German and two Danish educational institutions/production schools (Bojanowski 1996) and two universities. This project in the field of school-to-work transition explores the topic of promoting cross-border mobility and labour market accessibility for young people regarded as socially disadvantaged in precarious employment sectors on both sides of the Danish-German border. Taking a qualitative approach, the project methodology comprises the reconstruction, using objective hermeneutics, of the relationship between practice and academic research on the basis of interviews with educators conducted in the course of the project (Garz 2013). The project illustrates different combinations of practice and academic research and the relationships between them where academic expertise, along with pedagogical professionalisation, a mouthpiece capable of attracting public attention and an entity which facilitates reflection, is useful in the practical setting. The paper provides an insight into settings for cooperation between research and practice that are of relevance to research work in the area of preparation courses for vocational education.” (author’s abstract; BIBB-Doku)
