Abstract
"Valid measurement of professional competencies poses a challenge to researchers in vocational domains. This is because the construct´s structure often is multidimensional and, unlike professional knowledge, skills and abilities cannot be measured adequately with paper and pencil tests. The following paper is the first to analyse the dimensional structure of professional competencies in the domain of automotive mechatronics technicians. The analysis is based on cross-sectional data that was gathered using simulations and video-based vignettes covering the main job requirements. A second question to be covered in this paper is the predictive power of professional knowledge for the aforementioned professional competencies. The main results are: 1. Compared to preceding versions the quality of the test instruments was substantially improved. However, regarding some subtests optimization is still needed. 2. The results indicate a 3-dimensional structure of professional competencies reflecting trouble shooting, service, and maintenance and repair. After controlling professional knowledge all three show low to moderate correlations. 3. The different sub-dimensions of professional knowledge exhibit different predictive power with respect to the three competency dimensions. As could be expected, this appears largely due to the extent of overlaps in their content." (author's abstract)
