Abstract
"Based on data from the first wave of the study "Multilingual development: A longitudinal perspective" (MEZ), the present contribution addresses the question of how mono- and multilingual secondary students perceive the value of English skills with regard to their personal occupational future, how their perception is related to their English skills, and whether differences in the English skills of mono- and multilingual students can be explained by differences in the perception of the importance of English skills for their occupational futures. The results point to systematic differences in the perception of mono- and multilinguals. The relationship between the perceived value of English skills for the students' occupational future and their English language skills is weak, but significant. Differences in the English skills of mono- and multilinguals cannot be explained by differences in their evaluation of the value of foreign language skills in the labor market." (authors' abtract; BIBB-Doku)
