Abstract
“Research on school development resembles a patchwork rug. At least since schools were given greater self-responsibility, various papers have been published on the acceptance of school development measures or on the handling of evaluation results. These publications contain descriptions rather than an understanding of why responses vary in relation to schools. This is particularly the case with research on the effect on class settings, on performance results, or on learning support for students. The question as to why school development measures are effective or not remains unanswered. According to an initial hypothesis, professional action on the part of educators is characterised by conflicting requirements and constantly calls for new positioning in specific learning and teaching situations. Key factors for such situations are individual and common concepts of meaning (e. g. fundamental convictions, subjective theories, value systems or interpretations). Of particular relevance within the context of the issue at hand are the common concepts of meaning, which can be perceived as the culture of a school, and how they are associated with individual patterns of meaning. The paper describes a theory-guided discussion approach in form of theses as a suggestion for a procedure which is suitable to understand the influence of culturally anchored concepts of meaning on individual motives for a pedagogical action in the context of a single school. To implement this issue, a methodological procedure is also developed from the link between school development advice and research. The aim of this practice-oriented research approach is to identify missing links for an improved effectiveness of school development measures.” (authors’ abstract; BIBB-Doku)
