How accurate are recent BLS occupational projections?

Abstract

"At the beginning of the 1980's, some analysts predicted an increase in lower-skilled jobs relative to higher-skilled jobs as a result of technological and other changes. Tey based their forecast in part on Bureau of Labor Statistics projections of the future work force. How good is the past record of BLS projections? This communication offers an evaluation of the accuracy of the BLS projections of employment growth in the 1980's by major occupational groups. It also considers the accuracy of earlier projections covering the 1960's and 1970's and takes a preliminary look at the projections to 1995 and to 2000." Sie basierten ihre Vorhersage auf Projektionen des Büros für Arbeitsstatistik (BLS). Der Beitrag geht der Frage nach, wie genau die neuen Berufsprojektionen des BLS sind. Der Artikel verdeutlicht die Entwicklung der Genauigkeit der Statistik am Beispiel des Beschäftigungswachstums in den 80er Jahren, nach Hauptberufsgruppen. Dabei werden auch frühere Projektionen 1960 und 1970 betrachtet und vorläufige Betrachtungen bis 1995 und 2000 angestellt. (IAB)
