Abstract

„This article addresses the problem that the subject of „enterprise based continuing vocational education“ is determined by a multitude of theories from different pedagogical sub-disciplines (namely adult education/further education, corporate education, organizational education and vocational and business education) as well as from non-pedagogical disciplines (e.g. business administration, industrial and labor sociology) and that the subject definitions therefore sometimes differ greatly. The available theories are reconstructed, systematized, and critically evaluated with regard to their usefulness for defining the subject matter. To date, a systematization that considers theories of enterprise based continuing vocational education in both pedagogy and non-pedagogical disciplines is lacking. The theoretical systematization is based on various ordering dimensions derived from the academic literature on theories of adult education/continuing education: extra-disciplinary/intra-disciplinary, observational/actional perspective, and macro-level/meso-level/micro-level. Secondly, specific dimensions of order for enterprise based continuing vocational education are used, namely, understanding the institutional context of the company, the epistemological questions, and understanding the tasks of the teaching staff. These dimensions have not been utilized in previous systematizations of theories of enterprise based continuing vocational education. A determination of the strengths and weaknesses of the individual theories or theoretical directions, i.e., a theory assessment, can only be undertaken in a preliminary manner here. For such an assessment, it is argued, a metatheoretical position is useful, which allows for the consideration and appreciation of the heterogeneous approaches and their respective explanatory claims. Such a "meta-reflexive" position also offers the possibility of keeping existing tensions (for example, between pedagogical and organizational logic) theoretically manageable, rather than remaining mired in irreconcilable controversies or – in the form of attempts at theory integration – assuming convergence. Metatheoretical reference points are primarily the meta-reflexive perspectives of Cramer in the context of teacher education and of Schimank and Anicker in the context of sociology. One aim of this article is also to stimulate the discussion of theories of enterprise based continuing vocational education, which has so far been insufficiently developed.“ (authors‘ abstract; BIBB-Doku)
