Abstract
„Master craftsman qualification is of central importance for the skilled crafts sector. Currently, the debate on skilled crafts policy is dominated by the discrepancy between the high number of skilled crafts businesses due to be handed over and the insufficient number of master craftsmen and women graduates. Focusing on the resulting consequences and strategies to counteract this development, another important target group remains out of focus in the context of securing skilled workers: The study on master craftsperson graduates, conducted regularly since 2014 by the Research Institute for Vocational Training in the Skilled Crafts (FBH) at the University of Cologne, shows that half of the graduates are in employment three to four years after taking the master craftsperson examination and have no intention of becoming self-employed (Rasch 2022). This article focuses on why people in the skilled crafts sector opt for a master craftsman qualification without the aim of becoming self-employed, what career development opportunities are available to them, and how they assess their path in retrospect. The results indicate that, from the perspective of securing skilled workers, careers beyond self-employment are an important aspect of HR work in companies, and support opportunities must be created in equal measure.“ (author’s abstract; BIBB-Doku)
